Empowering Women through Makeup: Angel Deihl
Angel Deihl is a true multipotentialite, boasting a wide array of skills and talents. From makeup artistry to wardrobe styling, jewelry designing to event coordinating, talent management to holistic healing, she wears many hats effortlessly. As if that weren't enough, she's also a former model and actress and your ultimate cheerleader—plus, she could probably change your tire in a pinch! I first crossed paths with Angel at a "Goddess Gathering" where we immersed ourselves in a chakra healing meditation beneath the glow of a full moon. Leaving the gathering, I felt a sense of gratitude for having connected with Angel. For the sake of simplicity, let's dive into her captivating makeup artistry. Enjoy!
MUDRA LOVE: Tell me about how you became a make-up artist. What were your first few years like?
ANGEL DEIHL: I was about the age of 15 or so I was modeling and fell in love with the makeup side of things and that is how I got sucked into the art. I would play on every face I could get my hands on. I moved to LA at the age of 22 and went to a makeup trade school and started to book shoots shortly after moving to LA. I felt things just aligned for me there.
ML: What do you like about your profession? What’s the best part?
AD: I love helping women step into their power. I starts from the makeup room where we bond on subjects like boys, art, travel, spiritual beliefs, etc. I love creating a new look on the model or actress that she hasn’t done before and watching them show it off on the camera with such confidence. It’s instant gratification.
ML: Do you have a particular face or canvas you like working on?
AD: I love to work on any face, all faces are beautiful to me—any color, shape or size, or even genders. I just love painting on faces and creating whatever I feel.
ML: What’s your favorite make-up style? Beauty, glam, au naturale…
AD: I love Au Naturale to be honest. I think it’s an art when you can just enhance and not completely transform. However, there are times I want to just whip out some bold looks.
ML: I think you mentioned to me before about your healing hands. I’ve definitely felt your therapeutic touch when you do my makeup. Would you care to share a little about that?
AD: I didn’t really believe in the whole psychic world, but one day I went to a friend’s birthday party and was told by a spiritual woman I had hands that could heal. I felt everyone must have them. But as I started to experiment more on touch, I felt that one can develop them if they focused on them. I started to use them in healing ways and I do feel some energetic pulses and healing when using them for arts and prayers.
ML: What’s been a highlight for you in your career?
AD: Highlight of my career has to be when I was working with Luke Storey. He was a wardrobe king in Los Angeles and he hired me on most of his shoots. I started to book not only make-up gigs, but also wardrobe with him and I got to work with many celebrities, which is a big deal in Hollywood. I was just really excited to work with more quality photographers, and talent all around.
ML: Any challenges or setbacks you’d like to share?
AD: Challenges and setbacks are part of the process. I had my divorce that was painful. Trying to make it as a single mom in my career, with no help from anyone was a big challenge for sure. I got through it, positive thoughts and finding new friends that truly believed in me.
ML: What’s your personal beauty routine?
AD: I try all new gadgets as possible, red light, blue light, lots of serums, exfoliations, and tons of eye cream!
ML: Beauty/ skincare products you can’t live without:
AD: I can’t live without eye cream and concealer. All my close friends know, I always apply, re-apply and repeat.
ML: One piece of advice you would share with someone interested in becoming a MUA?
AD: Constantly create, don’t stop creating. Play with all faces as much as possible. I believe art should always be practiced even when you get to a point where you’re getting paid the big bucks. Trends are always changing and you need to keep up with the products and styles, don’t get stuck. Focus on what type of artist you want to be and do that style over and over. Manifest it!
